Game should start at 6PM because the last game went to OT…hopefuly the guy that runs this stream will put the game on!
The St. Mary’s game will be on ESPNU at 5:30PM. Unfortunately, it looks like I’ll be listening to the game online since I don’t get that channel or ESPN Full Court. If anyone will watching the game and is interested in running a live blog to talk about what they are seeing for those without TV access, I will be more than glad to set one up. Just let me know in the comments.
The Friars will return to action on Sunday, November 30 versus Saint Mary’s College to determine the fourth and sixth place finishers in the final round of the 76 Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif. It will mark the second meeting all-time between the two Catholic colleges from opposite coasts. In the only meeting all-time, the Friars defeated Saint Mary’s, 81-79, on December 15, 1965 in Providence, R.I.
Following Friday’s win, Saint Mary’s is 4-1 on the season and has a 1-1 record in the 76 Classic. The Gaels opened the year with an 86-55 win over Division II Seattle Pacific, then improved to 2-0 with a 99-85 win over Fresno State, and started 3-0 following an 86-54 win over NAIA Vanguard. After losing to UTEP (75-62) to open the tournament, SMC picked up its fourth win on Friday, defeating CS Fullerton.
RADIO AND TELEVISION
The Saint Mary’s versus Providence game will be televised on ESPNU with Steve Physioc and Bob Wenzel calling the action. The Saint Mary’s radio broadcast will be available on the commercial station for SMC basketball, KDIA AM 1640, with Mike Bouve calling the action courtside. The broadcast will be available at 3 p.m., and will pick-up the action live and in progress. The free internet broadcast will be available on line through SMCGaels.com or KDIA.com.

Since Herb Hill and Austin Croshere don’t get any run on their teams, Ryan Gomes is the only former Friar in the NBA who gets any serious playing time. So, I am going to try to give a little Gomes update after each Timberwolves game.
Minnesota has played two games since my last Gomes report.
Wednesay Night – “Shaq’s return lifts balanced Suns over Wolves”
The Timberwolves lost 110-102 at home against the Suns.
Gomes started again and played a season high 39 minutes. He went 5-14 from the field and scored 16 points. Ryan also pulled down 4 rebounds.
Gomes on Shaq:
“You’ve got to push him off the block, but you can’t. He’s tough,” Wolves forward Ryan Gomes said. “And he was hitting that hook shot tonight. He clogs everything up down there on offense and on defense.”

Friday Night – “Thunder tie franchise record, lose 14th straight”
Minnesota won for the 3rd time in their last 5 games, beating Oklahoma City 105-103.
Mike Miller hit a jumpshot on a pass from Gomes with .1 second on the clock for the win.
Gomes was in the starting lineup and played 33 minutes. He scored 11 points on 4-10 shooting. For the second straight game Ryan pulled down 4 rebounds.
Through 14 games, here are Gomes’ averages.
———————————————
28 minutes
10.6 Points
4.1 Rebounds
1.7 Assists
———————————————
Over the past seven games, he’s averaged 13 points, 1.3 threes, 4.7 boards and 1.1 steals in 33 minutes per game.
Minnesota’s next game is tonight against Denver.
We did the same thing tonight. We kept fighting and just kept playing and stayed in the game. All of a sudden you knock down some shots, you make a couple big stops and you put pressure on the other team. Momentum is a funny thing and we definitely had it in the last few minutes.

I didn’t get a chance to see or hear any of the game. I wish I could have taped it somehow though (it wasn’t on regular ESPN channels though), because the Friars pulled off a very important victory. Down 62-57 with 3 minutes to go, the Providence Friars were looking at a disastrous 0-2 record in the Anaheim Classic. What did they do? They made sure Charlotte would not score for the rest of the game thanks to several steals. After a nice 10-0 run to close the game, Providence had stolen the game they trailed for the entire night.
Marshon Brooks had 5 of his 12 points in those three minutes.
Jeff Xavier had 3 of the Friars’ 10 steals.
I’m excited for the win because it showed HUGE toughness, and these kind of games can really carry over, no matter who the opponent is.

FOUR FACTORS!
As you can see from the four factors, the turnover percentage played a huge part in the outcome of the game. The Friars forced 20+ turnovers for the 2nd straight game, and only committed 13 themselves.
Not only did PC excel at getting to the line, but they finally hit their freebies! 13-16 for a season best 81.3%!
The rebounding continues to be an issue, although the Friars won the offensive rebound battle 11-10.
OTHER STAT NOTES
- Despite poor shooting in the first half, the Friars put together an offensive rating of 98.5 (based on 68 possessions). In the Baylor game, there were 77 possessions, and the Friars had an offensive rating of 72.7
- The Friars held Charlotte to a offensive rating of 91.2. Baylor had a 93.5 ORtg.
- The three ball was again not falling for PC (23.5%). However they attempted their fewest 3’s in a game with 17. It was the first game all season the Friars attempted less than 20 shots from behind the arc.
AROUND THE INTERWEBS
Projo.com – PC Past Charlotte In Anaheim
The win masks what are some real red flags with the Friars at this point of the season. For the second straight game here, the team did not shoot well. PC made just 4 of 17 threes and was out-rebounded, 34-30.
Projo.com Hoops Blog – PC Pulls Off Comeback, 67-62
The Friars will now play St. Mary’s and its All-American guard Patrick Mills at 5:30 on Sunday.
Charlotte Observer – Another late-game loss for 49ers
The 49ers (1-5) have lost five in a row since a season-opening victory over UNC-Greensboro, their longest losing streak since January, 1989.
“I’ve never been around a streak like this in my life,” coach Bobby Lutz said. “I still think this team is going to be good.”
Projo.com – Keno Davis says his Friars are showing they can hang tough
“We did the same thing tonight. We kept fighting and just kept playing and stayed in the game,” Davis said. “All of a sudden you knock down some shots, you make a couple big stops and you put pressure on the other team. Momentum is a funny thing and we definitely had it in the last few minutes.”
NEXT UP
St. Mary’s at 5:30PM on Sunday, for the fight for 5th place in the tournament
Not many positives to take out of this game, other than reiterating what the announcers kept saying — “The effort was there”, “They played”, yadda yadda yadda. While Providence showed some heart in various spurts throughout the game, they couldn’t capitilize on Baylor’s mistakes, and could just not for the life of them get the lead to under 10. Every time the Friars made a small run, Baylor quickly answered, or just watched as PC missed layup after layup and three-pointer after three-pointer.

Overall, it was a difficult game to watch for several reasons.
1. 16-27 from the line. 9 of those courtesy of Geoff McDermott and Jonathan Kale.
2. 4-21 (.190) from behind the arc. Live and die by the three continues. This time, they died. A horrible, horrible death.
3. A lot of missed close shots. BUNNIES. Maybe counted 5?
What’s even more frustrating, is that Baylor also shot 4-21 from behind the arc, and also shot pretty crappy from the line. They had WAY more turnovers (20+), but it didn’t matter because Providence could not shoot the ball from anywhere on the court. The fact that the Friars cut the lead to 8 with 2 minutes left was pretty amazing. You aren’t going to be in many games shooting 32% from the field.
Providence plays Charlotte Friday night.
