Projecting the tournament field in December is obviously pretty silly, but I happened to check it out just to see what shape the BIG EAST was in out of pure curiosity. For a second, I was a little shocked to see 10 teams from the conference listed (did I travel back in time two years??). Oh yeah, that whole 68 team field thing that gives 3 extra At-Large bids could have something to do with that. Anyways, in the BIG EAST breakdown I was also a little shocked to see our Providence Friars listed as “On the fence“.
Projected champ: Pittsburgh
At-large: Cincinnati, Connecticut, Georgetown, Louisville, Notre Dame, St. John’s, Syracuse, Villanova, West Virginia
On the fence: Providence
To be fair, it doesn’t mean Jerry Palm thinks PC will have a killer season in the BIG EAST.
Bracket projections are always based on “as if the tournament started today.” I am not predicting how teams will finish the season.
Interesting, because “as of today” St. John’s (12 seed) lost to St. Bonaventure and is still running purely on hype. Undefeated (and still a bit untested) Cincinnati was listed in the “last four in” category. They would get one of the FOUR play-in games.
Boston College (#9 seed) was the only team in the field that the Friars will play out of conference.
