Today at Alumni Hall, Friar fans were able to see the next step for Ed Cooley’s new Friars at the annual Mal Brown scrimmage. Just like every other Friar fan, I’m incredibly excited about the Ed Cooley era. An inter-squad scrimmage at the start of a rebuilding year normally isn’t a place where I’d think I could become even more excited. However, I saw this image of Ed Cooley that was taken before the scrimmage.

I don’t know much about basketball, but I know everything about Dunkin’ Donuts — and I know a large Dunkin’ cup when I see it! Did I mention I love Ed Cooley?
Anyways, here were the two teams that faced off.
The White Team defeated the Black Team 44-38 in two 10-minute halves.
Freshman LaDontae Henton was the big standout, mostly because he scored some BUCKETS. Three point BUCKETS in fact, in 4-4 fashion on the way to a game high 18 points.
I think the Fan Fest and scrimmage is great for the fans, but it’s hard to take any real stock on how the players do in this setting. As Kevin from Friar Basketball pointed out yesterday, “A word of caution: Dre Evans had 18 points, five rebounds, and five assists in last year’s scrimmage and proceeded to score more than one field goal in a game only once a season ago“. Now, I think Henton will not end up like Dre Evans (he will be the anti-Dre Evans and actually be a productive frosh who plays big minutes and writes coherent things on Twitter), but the performances should be taken with a grain of salt.
