I’m not quite sure how I missed this news last year, but apparently Marcus Douthit is on the Philippines National Basketball Team? Apparently the country is lax about giving citizenship away in order to improve their basketball team. Wizards center JaVale McGee is reportedly interested in playing, so lawmakers are ready to try to get him citizenship. On Deadspin yesterday, Marcus Douthit gets a shout out for how he was able to become a Filipino.

JaVale McGee To Become The Latest Non-Filipino On The Philippines National Basketball Team

It’s nothing new. McGee will be teammates with Marcus Douthit, a Providence graduate who was drafted by the Lakers and went on to makes stops in the D-League, Belgium, Russia, Turkey, Korea and China before discovering his Filipino pride. Last year, the Philippines House of Representatives passed Bill No. 2307, which made Douthit a naturalized citizen despite having lived in the country for only three months. The bill was passed to the President’s desk, where it sat for 30 days without being signed, and so automatically became law.

  1. guess says:

yep he has been playing for Smart Gilas pilipinas for about 2 years now… we filipinos loved him.. but i think if Mcgee will be naturalized they cant play together since only 1 naturalized player can play for a national team….

Thanks for the comment. Have you seen him play recently? Haven’t really seen him since his days at Providence!
