Second Coat of Paint

FriartownMayor —  January 11th, 2012 4:01 PM — 2 Comments

Ed Cooley does not believe in spackling.

He does not believe in base coats, but does love seeing his players in overcoats before games. Coach Cooley wants his bigs to wear down the paint that has killed the Friars over the past few seasons. He wants coat after coat of solid paint play from his bigs.

A lot has been said thus far of the no nonsense attitude and persona that Cooley has instilled at Providence. He has said time and time again that he needs each player to buy into his system. One player that hasn’t seemed to find the funds necessary to buy into the Cooley way has been Bilal Dixon.

Bilal is only averaging 13.5 minutes per game in his third season for the Friars, he averaged 19.9 last season and 24.6 the year before that. Dixon only played 18 minutes combined in the Friars first two conference games, St. John’s and Georgetown, and did not get off the pine against top ranked Syracuse.

Entering their fourth game of the early Big East season, the Friars were about to face Seton Hall and arguably one of the premier bigs in the league in Herb Pope. Whether it was something he showed in practice between games or something he asked Cooley to let him prove, Bilal played 21 key minutes for the Friars as they battled tooth and nail with the Hall. Dixon was 4-4 from the field with 6 blocks and 4 boards. He showed that tenacity and fire he has shown in his first few years wearing that Providence uniform.

LaDontae Henton was ranked No. 17 in ESPN’s Top 25 Freshmen list today.

ESPN: The nation’s top 25 freshmen

17. LaDontae Henton, Providence Friars
Did you seen Henton going to war against Syracuse in PC’s 87-73 loss last week? Someone forgot to tell him that was the No. 1 team in the country he was facing. The box score (11 points, 13 boards) really doesn’t do justice to the fearlessness displayed by a 6-6 freshman in a game where the Friars basically had no business being as competitive as they were. Coach Ed Cooley’s stylistic peculiarity is that players he likes never come out of the game, and if Henton doesn’t drop dead from exhaustion, he’ll make a name for himself.

After a week of working long hours and having my ass kicked up and down the office, breaking up with my girlfriend after dating her for a year, and being generally frustrated with my inability to write anything decent, I can say pretty confidently that I really needed to see a win. Hell we all did.

And holy hell did we get that win.

Winning!

With that being awesome, let’s get to it.

Around the Web: Providence Beats Louisville

Friars.com: Men’s Basketball Knocks Off No. 14/15 Louisville 90-59

The Providence men’s basketball team (12-6, 1-4 BIG EAST) knocked off No. 14/15 Louisville (13-4, 1-3 BIG EAST) by the score of 90-59 at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center on Jan. 10. The 31-point win was the Friars’ largest margin of victory ever over a ranked team. Previously, Providence had beaten then-No. 14/16 Holy Cross 90-64 on Jan. 18, 1978.

ESPN (AP): Providence 90, No. 14 Louisville 59

“It was an incredible feeling that you can come home,” said Cooley, who grew up in Providence watching the 1987 team. “When (this building) is rocking, there’s no better place.”

CBS: Louisville’s free-fall down to earth continues

Pitino’s team got crushed on the glass against Kentucky — but there’s no shame in that. But Louisville also lost the battle on the glass to Georgetown and allowed a lackluster Providence frontline to dominate.

Kadeem Batts went for 27 points.

Yes, Kadeem Betts.

GoLocalProv: Providence punishes 15th ranked Louisville, 90-59

Thanks to two key three-pointers from Bryce Cotton (27 points), and steady play from Vincent Council (15 points, 14 assists) in finding the openings on the floor through the Cardinals’ zone defense, the Friars finished out the first half with an incredible 27-8 run over that final 9:42 to take an 18 point lead into the locker room at halftime – 43-25.

Courier-Journal: Louisville basketball falls to Providence 90-59

In some respects, the Cards looked nothing like the team that was once ranked No. 4 and stayed undefeated through their first 12 games. Then again, the Friars simply exploited some of their weaknesses.

Friar Basketball: Friars Roll Pitino, Cardinals for Cooley’s First Big East Win

Cotton and Batts Explode: It’s hard to be much more efficient than Cotton (6-7 FG, 5-6 from three, 10-12 at the free throw line), who had struggled to find his shot on Saturday versus Seton Hall, but carried the offense as it pulled away from Louisville Tuesday.

It was a far more aggressive Batts on both ends from the start. Typically a grounded defender, Batts had three impressive blocks in the first half (a career high) and scored in a variety of ways in producing a 27 point, 10 rebound evening. His aggression has been challenged in this space, but he attempted 10 free throws (making nine of them) and threw down a vicious dunk early in the second half that seemed to deflate an already embarrassed opponent.

The Dagger: Breakfast Buffet: Louisville’s nosedive gets worse

Louisville’s midseason free fall reached new depths Tuesday night when the Cardinals lost for the fourth time in five games, falling to Providence 90-59. The most alarming part was the lack of fight the Cardinals showed after absorbing the Friars’ best punch to the jaw in the first half. They got overanxious with quick shots on offense, they lost concentration on defense and they essentially stopped giving maximum effort by the second half. “It’s always that one game a year that you just can’t explain,” Rick Pitino said afterward. The Cardinals better hope this was it.

Card Chronicle: Providence Deals Louisville Humiliating 90-59 Loss

Louisville just lost to what appears to be the worst team in the conference by 34 points. They are in the easiest portion of their Big East schedule and they’re currently 1-3. They’ve gone from a fun-loving group eager to outwork opponents in every facet of every game to….whatever it was we just watched.

The best part about having Rick Pitino at Louisville has been that his teams have never been outworked. I’ve always taken great pride in that, because it’s a feeling I didn’t have watching some of those teams in the late ’90s. Thinking that you care more than the players is a pathetic feeling, and one I haven’t had (in basketball) since Pitino took over in 2001.

U of L Card Game: New ugly for Louisville basketball

Started out promising enough with Peyton Siva going the length of the court for a dunk to give his team a 7-4 lead. But after he descends, Siva is wincing, having landed badly on that high ankle sprain, shaking it off, pretending it never happened.

Siva would miss his next four shots, two of them on what should have been easy layups, make only one assist, and foul out of the game with 11 minutes left in the game, an ugly finish in a badly directed performance.

Strait Cards: Pinkie firmly pressed on the panic button, Cards fall big to PC

The Cards ran into the so-called “perfect storm” Tuesday and could not respond.

The loss is the Cardinals second worse since joining the Big East. They fell to Notre Dame, 90-57, on February 12, 2009. Still, that game was one that could’ve been thrown out the window as that team was loaded and went on to win the league regular season and tournament en route to earning the number one overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. That Elite Eight team also had three players that are currently on NBA rosters. This team likely has none.

The Cardinal Connect: Providence 90 – Louisville 59: Time To Panic

I don’t really know what to say. Words can’t describe the embarrassment that we all just witnessed. I’ve seen Louisville teams take a beating before, but I’m honestly not sure if ive seen anything like that. There was no fight. They pretty much just laid down. I honestly thought the Notre Dame loss was something you couldn’t really blame on coaching. There were missed free throws, missed lay-ups, missed defensive assignments ect. However, tonight’s loss is a big red flag on this coaching staff. When you’re team stops fighting for you, then something is wrong. This team has the pieces to make it work, but something definitely has to change.

Kris Dunn, Conqueror of Bacon

Kris Dunn had a near triple-double last night in New London’s latest win. He scored 35 points, pulled down another 18 rebounds, and dropped 9 assists against Bacon Academy. Yes, Bacon. Mmm, bacon.

“The only problem with bacon is that it makes you thirsty…for more BACON!” – Jim Gaffigan.

You can say the same about Kris Dunn highlight videos. I can’t get enough. Check out the six dunks and more below.

Ed Cooley spoke to the media along with Bryce Cotton and Kadeem Batts following PC’s 90-59 win over #14 Louisville.

The Providence Friars absolutely destroyed the ranked Louisville Cardinals 90-59 on national television to give Ed Cooley his first BIG EAST win as head coach of PC. The game was pretty even for the first seven minutes, with the Friars then holding a small lead over the next 7. With about 6 minutes left, the wheels started to come for the Cardinals and PC pretty much ran them off the court for the rest of the game.

After the first four BIG EAST games this season, it feels great to finally be in the win column in conference play (what up Pitt!). Ed Cooley and the players certainly deserved this, and the fact that the blowout came against Rick Pitino makes it all the better. Honoring the 1987 Final Four team was great and a huge part of Friar history, but this is Ed Cooley’s team now.

Why the Friars Won: Without Gerard Coleman in the lineup (out with a back injury), the Friars were going need everyone else to step up. And they did. Big time. Kadeem Batts had a career game, scoring 27 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Bryce Cotton simply could not miss, also throwing down 27 points by going a perfect 5-5 from behind the arc. Vincent Council had an absolute monster game with 15 points, 14 assists, and 8 rebounds. He pretty much did whatever he wanted to do out there, and Louisville had no intentions of stopping him.

Why Louisville Lost: While they ran into a team that could do no wrong, it was curious to why Rick Pitino continually sat in the zone and let shot after shot fall in for Providence. Things were quite the opposite when the Cards had the ball, as they couldn’t hit threes, dunks, foul shots, you name it. Peyton Siva also mailed it in, seemingly fouling out early in the 2nd half on purpose just so he didn’t have to deal with the debacle on the court. It was just that kind of night for Pitino and Louisville.

Turning Point:: With 8:25 left in the game, PC led 20-17. Then, Vincent Council decided “Hey, let’s make this a blowout”. Three pointer, layup, three pointer, layup. BOOM. ROASTED.

Player of the Game: Bryce Cotton (with Batts a close second). 5-5 from downtown, and 10-12 from the foul line. Seemed like his points came at a time that just broke the back of Louisville.

Play of the Game: Kadeem Batts had a fantastic fast break dunk early on in the 2nd half while Louisville was sleeping. You can watch a bootleg version here until it makes the SportsCenter Top 10 plays tonight.

Despite this awkward form and the fact he was on the other end of the court, this Bryce Cotton shot probably went in.
