Archives For March 2012

Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal has reported that Ian Baker, a 2012 PG from Washington, DC, has committed to the Friars and will sign in a few weeks.

Friars continue to remake backcourt; will add Ian Baker

Baker was recruited by PC last summer but he ended up choosing South Carolina when PC received a verbal commitment from guard Kris Dunn. Dunn signed with PC last fall and became a McDonald’s All-American. Baker never signed with USC, however, and came back on the market in December. Now Baker is planning on signing with Providence in the spring period in two weeks.

With Vincent Council recently announcing he would return for next year and Kris Dunn on his way, the Friars are either going to be incredibly deep at the PG position (is it me, or have we had 1 PG every year for the last 10 years), or Kiwi Gardner isn’t in the plans. Either way, it’s another scholarship add, so obviously more transfers are coming (Coleman, Giplaye).

Here is more about Ian Baker from ESPN back in June of 2011.

Strengths:
Native of the Baltimore/DC corridor. Baker is a fusion of scoring and passing from the point guard position. He can get in lane and create scoring chances. Confident player and he’ll take his medicine and get to the line. Has the ability to run a team and play effectively in the halfcourt.

Weaknesses:
Baker’s biggest nemesis is decision making. He’s prone to going for the home run pass opting for the reward over the risk. Must value the basketball and become a better shooter from behind the line. Size is a question mark at the highest level. Keeping the assist to turnover ration in good shape is important.

Bottom Line:
Baker tracks as a very good mid-major recruit, the kind that would typically find a home in the A10. Big schools, given the state of the point guard play in the class will look his way. First tier mid-major recruit who will get sniffs from BCS leagues.

Ed Cooley on Tim Brando Show

Ed Cooley appeared on the Tim Brando Show this morning which airs on the CBS Sports Network. Jeff Goodman of CBS was the one to break the news on the possible transfer of Gerard Coleman, so I thought it was going to be interesting to see if that came up. Well, Cooley didn’t mention Coleman at all, but talked a little bit about the Final Four and his incoming class for next year (including saying that Kris Dunn didn’t play very well in the McDonald’s All-American game in a light hearted way).

Here is the video of his appearance below.

Providence Friars basketball has fallen on hard times over the last decade, but Friartown has two things going for them. Ed Cooley, and fond memories of the past that includes an improbable run to the Final Four. Thanks to a company called Retro College Cuts (check them out on Twitter @RetroCollegeCuts), Friar fans can pretend like it’s 1987 again and rock a replica of the shorts that Billy Donovan and company wore. If you’re not into the whole “tiny 80′s skin tight basketball shorts that basically end at the crotch” thing, don’t worry! They are modern baggy shorts, but still have the style and charm of PC’s old uniforms.

Retro College Cuts was kind enough to send me a pair of the shorts in order to review, and I’ve been rocking them at night after work the last several nights. The shorts are definitely high quality, and have a nice thickness that make them a very comfortable wear for me. Sizing has always been a problem for me with shorts (I’m about 6 foot and have somewhat long legs), but I got the large and it’s a great length right above my knee. I can’t say I’m going to be playing a lot of basketball in them (since well, I never really do any planned physical activity other than chasing a small child around), but you can bet your arse they’ll become a staple of my lounging around the house in the summer.

Style-wise it’s a pretty sweet PC logo as you can see from the picture. When I opened up the package the other night, my wife remarked “Those are really cool”. The dark part looks black in the picture, but in the light it looks brownish. As far as old PC shorts go, I’m a little partial to the all black ones with “Friars” text on them from the 90′s, but these are starting to grow on me.

The shorts are $69.99. That might sound weird, but what if you were in your driveway pretending you were Billy D and Pitino was violently screaming at you to jack up threes and you didn’t have these shorts on. That would be weird.

UPDATE: Now through Monday use code Nola12 and take $12 off the shorts for the final four

Here is the description from the their site.

The Providence Friars basketball can be traced back to 1921, when the four-year old school fielded its first basketball team on an informal basis. Since that time the program has logged 15 NCAA tournament, 5 Sweet Sixteen, 4 Elite Eight and two Final Four appearances. Three former players or coaches are enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball HOF including Dave Gavitt, John Thompson and Lenny Wilkins. The 1987 Providence team is potentially the most endearing to Friars Fans. Coached by a young Rick Pitino paired with the floor general point guard Billy Donavan, they posted a 25-9 record and made an incredible run to the Final Four that captivated the country. Pitino coached his sixth seeded Providence team to victories over UAB and Austin Peay in the first weekend. In the Sweet 16 the underdog Friars would pull off two upset wins over #2 seeded Alabama and #1 seeded Big East rival Georgetown. The wins would catapult Providence to the Final Four and into the hearts and imaginations of the nation that year. These replica game shorts are designed after the 1987 team.

Kris Dunn didn’t have the best game last night, but hey it’s an All-Star game where the top guys are doing their best to show off. The most important thing was that he played in the game and got the program some great exposure. The Friars and Ed Cooley got a ton of love from the broadcast on multiple occasions. Dunn finished with 4 points and 4 rebounds, and had some good steals on defense. The turnovers? Yeah, I’m not too worried.

Here is a game mixtape from Ballislife, featuring one of Dunn’s buckets.

After Jeff Goodman tweeted that Gerard Coleman would likely be transferring along with Ron Giplaye and Bilal Dixon, GoLocalProv.com published a story with some quotes from Ed Cooley on the whole situation. While Bilal Dixon is definitely not coming back next year, he’s not quite sure where all this talk about Coleman and Giplaye are coming from.

PC Rumors True & False

Reached by phone Wednesday night, Friars head coach Ed Cooley said, “the report out there is not true as far as I’m concerned.”

“I just met with the guys on the team yesterday and none of this (transferring) was discussed with Ron or Gerard. I don’t know where that report came from but it didn’t come from me,” he said. “Maybe it’s players talking or something like that, but those guys have said nothing to me about leaving.”

Cooley said that he was going to call Goodman after he got off the phone with me to talk to him about the report. Many Friar fans wonder who Goodman’s “source” may be on Coleman. One person close to the program wondered if it was former Friar assistant coach Chris Driscoll who came to PC from the BABC to join Keno Davis’ staff. When Cooley was hired, Driscoll was not retained. Some suggest that the recent defections of BABC players may be somehow related to Driscoll or wonder if he is advising any of these players. Goodman lives in the Boston area so Driscoll may very well be that “source” he is referring to.

Definitely sounds like some BABC involvement (Coleman and Giplaye both played there), and maybe the players just haven’t told Cooley yet? I don’t know, but sounds like nothing is final yet.

Gerard Coleman Likely to Transfer

According to Jeff Goodman of CBS, Gerard Coleman is likely to transfer. There have been some rumblings of this over the past week that I hoped would pass over, but sounds like the Friars back court next year will not as deep as originally thought.

Also confirmed what we’ve known for quite some time, Bilal Dixon and Ron Giplaye are definitely transferring.

Thank god Vincent Council announced he was coming back when he did, or Friartown would be in full panic mode coupled with all of the front court uncertainty.

The McDonald’s All-American festivities have been going on the past several days, culminating with the game tonight at 9:30 on ESPN. Kris Dunn has been impressing everyone left and right, even placing third in the Skills competition on Monday night. Here is a mix tape video of some footage from the practices. Check out the Kris Dunn move about 49 seconds in.

There have been rumors floating around the last several weeks that Vincent Council would be leaving PC to pursue a professional career. Even though Ed Cooley has a Top 10 recruiting class coming in, Friartown was fearing another growing pains type season with the possibility of losing one of the best point guards in the conference. That talk was put to rest as Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal reported that Council would in fact be returning for his senior season.

“It was a difficult decision, but I know it’s the right one,” Council said today at the Rhode Island Basketball luncheon at the Radisson in Warwick.

Below is a video of the Cox Sports Basketball Awards luncheon in which Council talks about returning.

Kris Dunn has won Gatorade’s Player of the Year award for Connecticut. Enjoy the Gatorade, because it’s almost Cooley-Aid time!

ESPN: Connecticut Boys Hoop POY: Kris Dunn

“Kris Dunn has been a pleasure to coach during his four years as a varsity starter,” said New London head coach Craig Parker. “He works extremely hard in the classroom and his passion for basketball is unsurpassed by anyone I’ve known in my 25 years of coaching.”
