Early this week, Utah State junior Danny Berger collapsed at practice and stopped breathing, but was thankfully revived and taken to the hospital. What saved him? An Automated External Defibrillator. Does that sound familiar? Ryan Gomes created the Hoops for Heart Health Foundation to help address the problem of Sudden Cardiac Arrest in high school, college, and pro sports. Those machines are exactly what Gomes helps donate.

According to the website:

“I started Hoops For Heart Health to bring together the basketball community in order to raise awareness to the growing problem of Sudden Cardiac Arrest in student athletes,” said Gomes. “If we can save just one life, it makes all of our efforts worthwhile.”

Well, according to USUfans, the defibrillator used to save Berger was in fact donated by Gomes.

Thanks to AGGIEFIGHT on USUFans.com I learned today that this device was donated to Utah State University by NBA player Ryan Gomes. Before Gomes made it to the NBA, he had an AAU teammate who passed away after collapsing in a pre game warmup session simply because an AED was not available to save him. Gomes teamed up with a charity known as Hoops for Heart Health with a goal of donating AED’s to schools and Rec
centers around the country.

Friartown should be very proud of Ryan, and what he has been able to accomplish off the court.

Bilal Dixon Has Been Around the Block

Bilal Dixon has been around the block. He’s been around the block so many times, that he’s lost almost 40 pounds since arriving at Towson. Plus, he’s a senior. I don’t know about you, but sounds like he is perfectly qualified to be a leader based on those two facts. What say you, Friartown?

Gomes Channels His Inner Russell Westbrook

Pictures from Ryan Gomes’ 30th Birthday Bash are now online for your living vicariously through a former Friar star pleasure. You can view the gallery here.

In the picture below, Ryan seems like he’s trying to enhance his NBA stock a little (he’s currently a free-agent) by going for the Russell Westbrook post-game look. With that white jacket, maybe he’s paying homage to the Friars Club, or secretly was a member in his PC days?? My mom always wanted me to join that (Mom for the last time, I know I would look cute in that jacket, but c’mon!), but the initial campus tour when I was deciding on colleges was enough for me. Plus, I didn’t really want to be in a cult. Love the old granny glasses look, RG.

Seems like Gomes had a great time, especially around these chics below. Don’t worry, his loving wife was also in attendance. Welcome to the 30 club, Ryan!

Celebrate Ryan Gomes’ 30th Birthday

dave@friarblog —  August 28th, 2012 9:32 PM —  Comments

Former Friar Ryan Gomes may be between jobs in the NBA, but it’s not stopping him from celebrating his 30th birthday in style featuring a “Night with the NBA”. On Saturday, September 8th, Ryan is holding his bash at the Silk Lounge in Hartford, CT chock full of elite NBA talent and BASKETBALL WIVES. Check out the online flyer below. I first viewed this pic on my phone and thought the guy over his shoulder was a slightly pudgier Vinnie from the Jersey Shore. But alas, it is world famous DJ Kid Kapri. I may sound a little old here and out of touch with what the kids are listening to these days, but I’m not entirely sure who that is. Sounds fun though.

It appears that anyone can go to this shindig, as tickets are available for $20 over at Eventbrite.

Last year, Gomes held a similar party in early September that ended tragically for one of his friends. TJ Mathis, a semi-pro basketball player who played on Gomes’ Greater Hartford Pro Am team, was murdered after driving home late that night. An awesome New Haven cop ended up catching the SOB who committed this awful act this past May.

Marshon Appears in NBA 2K13 Trailer

2KSports released a new trailer for their upcoming iteration of their basketball series that promotes their extra “All-Star” content if you preorder it. If you watch closely at the 0:37 mark, you can catch a digital Mrashon Brooks doing work in the “Rising Stars Challenge” feature.

London? How about CLEVELAND, where Marshon Brooks scored 44 and 47 points in back to back Dru Joyce Summer League games over the weekend. Nice work, Marshon. It’s no 52 points, but it’ll do.

Ryan Gomes is a Clipper No More

dave@friarblog —  July 18th, 2012 9:24 AM —  Comments

The Los Angeles Clippers, who at one point had the potential to have both NBA Friars on the team (Marshon Brooks was involved in a possible trade there), now have none. Facing a midnight deadline to excersise their amnesty clause, the Clippers used it on Ryan Gomes. They were able to make Ryan expendable since they signed Grant Hill earlier. He still plays in the NBA? What year is this?

Los Angeles Clippers release Ryan Gomes using amnesty clause

Gomes, 29, was entering the final year of a contract that was to pay him $4 million for the 2012-13 season. He averaged 2.3 points and 1.9 rebounds in 32 appearances for the Clippers last season.

The Clippers will now get to remove his salary from their books for salary cap and luxury tax purposes although Gomes will be paid in full. Gomes will enter a bidding pool comprised of teams that are under the salary cap. If no one claims him, he will be an unrestricted free agent.

Good thing Ryan got a Friars tattoo recently, and not a Clipper logo.

Marshon Brooks Involved in Double Alley-oop

dave@friarblog —  February 29th, 2012 1:14 PM —  Comments

It’s a double alley-oop all the way! Woooooh oh my GOD OH MY GOD!! Wooooooo. Oh WOW. It was starting to look like a TRIPLE alley-oop. ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE SKY!

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN!?

Well done, Marshon.

Marshon Brooks participated in the Rising Stars Challenge on Friday night as part of the NBA All-Star Weekend. While his “Team Chuck” won 146-133, Brooks had a few ridiculously bad plays perhaps trying to show off a little too much. Here they are in animated gif glory.

Yikes. Marshon finished with 8 points on 3-10 shooting, plus 3 assists (I’m assuming that failed dunk counted as one?). At least he’s playing well when the games count, eh?
