Friars Green Jerseys To Honor Sandy Hook

dave@friarblog —  December 18th, 2012 8:57 PM —  Comments

In tonight’s 79-45 win against Colgate the Friars honored Sandy Hook by wearing special green jerseys.

PC coach Ed Cooley, who previously coached at Fairfield (Newtown is in Fairfield County), said he notified Nike that he wanted to have special uniforms made for the occasion. He said the school would then send the jerseys to the victims’ families.

Cooley said he wants to have Providence wear a special uniform to honor the Sandy Hook Elementary school victims every year at this time of the season.

Here are some shots of the jerseys.

Ed Cooley, Ladies Man

dave@friarblog —  February 3rd, 2012 9:30 AM —  Comments

Ed Cooley had quite a busy day yesterday. He checked out JaKarr Sampson at the National Prep School Invitational at RIC this afternoon, saw his future player Ricardo Ledo in the same gym later on for a half (he scored only 10 points, but South Kent won handily), and hopped over to Sullivan’s Rhode to do The Ed Cooley Radio Show with John Rooke. Oh, and he still had time later in the night to help deliver pizzas (100 of them! With the help of women’s coach Phil Seymore) to students on campus. It looks like he picked one of the girls’ dorms. Cooley knows what’s up. Coach Seymore? Yeah you can talk to the dudes who will probably devour several pies by themselves.

Ledo on ESPN Recruiting Front Page

dave@friarblog —  December 7th, 2011 5:41 PM —  Comments

Ricardo Ledo was featured on the front page of ESPN College Basketball Recruiting today, with a link to Adam Finkelstein’s piece on the Hoop Mountain Prep Classic.

Hoop Mountain Prep Classic recap

Ricardo Ledo (Providence, R.I./South Kent)
2012, SG, 6-6, 185 pounds
College: Providence
The marquee matchup of the event saw Ledo’s South Kent squad against Tilton. In a game full of stars, Ledo was the best player on the floor. After a slow start that included just one bucket in the first 15 minutes, Ledo rattled off 19 straight points to close the first half, giving South Kent a double-digit lead that it wouldn’t relinquish. When he gets into a rhythm there’s absolutely no stopping him and he proved it on Sunday. His once-inconsistent jumper is now a true weapon to match his dribble-drive attack, and when he’s a willing distributor he only makes himself that much more effective.

Santa Cooley!

The Friar Faithful Facebook page (give it a like) just posted these amazing pictures of Coach Ed Cooley already rocking some holiday spirit in Friartown.

Where can I get this Friars Santa Suit? What is in Santa Cooley’s sack? Can Chris Obekpa fit in there? Is he taking requests for what I want for Christmas? I must know these things.

Check out the full album here.

Kris Dunn is on the cover of the November issue of ESPN HS (Connecticut Edition).

Check it out!

Dunn was named to the Connecticut’s First-Team All-State on the website last week.

Best. Pumpkin. Ever.

dave@friarblog —  October 29th, 2011 8:31 PM —  Comments

During the fall, I like to do as much as I can involving incorporating pumpkins into my food and everyday drink. Pumpkin coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts, Pumpkin beers (Saranac, Smutty Nose, Blue Moon are my favorites), breads and muffins. My goal is to find ways to make more dinner foods with it (Pumpkin Milk Steak, boiled over?) so I can go days ingesting nothing but pumpkin. Until that dream is realized, I’ll have to take the cue of Twitter user @djt846 and combine pumpkins with Providence College Basketball. Check out the pictures he sent me of his creation for Halloween. I hope it doesn’t scare too many kids on Monday who may be terrified of bad defense.

Here it is lit up.

Happy Halloween Friar fans!

Anyone else doing anything Friar related for the holiday?

How about everyone else? Did you get your tickets, or plan on getting them?

Pretty awesome pic on Johnnie’s Friar debut!  I know he’ll take good care of Ryan Gomes’ old number.
