The Providence Friars moved to 8-2 on the year after crushing Colgate 79-45. Kris Dunn had quite the first impression, setting a Friar record for assists in a debut with 13 in 27 minutes of play. Bryce Cotton scored 21 points to lead everyone as usual, and Josh Fortune had some hot shooting to finish with 17 points. LaDontae Henton had 10 rebounds.

Ed Cooley spoke to the media following the game joined by Kris Dunn. You can listen below.

The Friars’ season got off to a near disaster of a start this afternoon, as they played NJIT down to the wire but escaped with a 64-63 victory. Ice Cotton needed to hit 1 of 2 foul shots with about 5 seconds left to break a tie game, and the Highlanders missed a desperation three to win at the buzzer.

PC had to play most of the game without Vincent Council, who injured his hamstring FIVE MINUTES INTO THE SEASON. He will not be playing Monday against Bryant, and will get an MRI tomorrow to get more the extent of the injury.

The Providence Friars lost yet another game in which they led down the stretch, this time losing to South Florida at home 55-48.

The Friars led 46-41 with 2:30 remaining, but South Florida guard Shaun Noriega nailed two 3-pointers in a row to give the Bulls a one-point lead with just under two minutes remaining.

Bulls’ Coach Stan Heath said, “I asked Noriega if he could do it, and he said, `I’ve got one.’ But he gave me two.” Noriega only appeared in the game for one minute.

The Providence Friars lost in heartbreaking fashion today to West Virginia, falling 87-84 in overtime. Daryl “Truck” Bryant hit the winning three with 4 seconds left, and Vincent Council’s three point attempt to tie fell short at the buzzer.

The Friars had as much as a 15 point lead in the first half, and could have won the game in regulation if not for poor foul shooting down the stretch. Gerard Coleman (who had a career game scoring 30 points) missed 2, and Bilal Dixon and Vincent Council each missed 1 over the final three minutes.
