The Marquette Golden Eagles defeated the Providence Friars tonight 79-72. Marquette shot lights out in the 2nd half (they hit 11 of their first 14 attempts and went a ridiculous 9-11 from downtown overall) to pull away from the Friars after a back and forth first half. Jae Crowder had 18 points, while Jamil Wilson had a career high 16 points off the bench.

Wilson gave Marquette a 62-57 edge with 10:45 to play when he hit a jumper from the top and followed that with a 3 from the left corner.

After Gerard Coleman had a basket for Providence, Wilson had consecutive baskets in the lane, pushing the Golden Eagles’ lead to 66-59 with 8:02 left.

Gardner then took over the scoring. He scored in the lane, hit one free throw and a putback made it an 11-point lead with 3:51 remaining.

Bryce Cotton had 28 points to lead all scorers.

Here is the Buzz Williams and Ed Cooley press conference following the game tonight.

The last time the Friars played the Marquette Golden Eagles, it was quite the bittersweet moment. Sure, it was another disappointing showing at Madison Square Garden in the BIG EAST Tournament as Providence got blown out by Buzz’s boys yet again. However, it was also the final game of Keno Davis basketball we had to suffer through. The pain finally ended that night!

As Marquette heads to the Dunk in the snow this evening, they are without question going to see a different team than the one they’ve beaten now 7 times in a row. The Friars have been playing hard, have had a full week off, and finally have the regular starters all ready to play. Unfortunately for PC, they will be up against the usual kind of tough basketball from a team looking to make some noise in the top of the conference standings.

It’s Saturday morning, the Friars are playing tonight, and my Giants are playing in the NFC Championship tomorrow night. To put some extra excitement in an already good weekend, John Rooke had the following to say in his “Thinking Out Loud” column on GoLocalProv.com

Let the good times roll? The Friars are inching ever-so-close to nailing down some big commitments from some big players…to add to a national Top 10 recruiting class for next year…

Wow.

Josh Fortune, after missing the last game due to back spams, came back in full force last night scoring a career high 35 points. He drilled 6 threes and helped his Kecoughtan team defeated Gloucester 90-40.

If you plan on attending the Providence / Marquette game at the Dunk tomorrow and sit anywhere near the Golden Eagles’ bench, you better hope they didn’t make a pregame stop at Haven Brothers or NY System.

The Ed Cooley aired last night from Chelo’s Hometown Bar & Grill. Here are some notes and quotes:

Cooley talked about how when he first saw the team practice, he figured 6 BIG EAST wins were achievable. After the first exhibition game against Assumption, he told Bob Driscoll the team would win two – and he was being honest. On where the team is now?:

“Although we are 1-5 in the BIG EAST. We’ve played 5 top 25 teams, the #1 team in the country twice in a 10 day period. We’ve lost two of our starters in back to back games. I think from a program standpoint we’re where I want us to be at this moment. We could have snuck out maybe a win against Seton Hall, make a few free throws against Georgetown maybe on the road. I have to be realistic with the process it takes to build a national championship program and there are going to bumps in the road like it’s going now. But i’m satisfied where we are.”

On Bryce Cotton:

“I don’t think it surpises me (his play). I thought he worked really hard this summer. He was in the gym every day making shots”

“It suprses to me that he’s not confident yet. If the coach told me to shoot, he would have to tell me to stop shooting. He doesn’t take enough shots. I’m proud of his work and the effor that he’s put in.”

On Kadeem Batts:

“He’s working on his body. I told him in practice that if he doesn’t play well, I’m going to embarass him with my body, and take my shirt off.”

“We need him to rebound at a higher level”

Bilal Dixon:

“Bilal has bought in to just winning basketball games for the Friars”

On biggest challenge as the head coach:

“To attract high level players that’s going to believe in us where our program is right now.”

On Rick Barnes saying there are difficulties in recruiting without a football program:

“Rick wasn’t from here…he did an ubelieveable job, but Rick Barnes didn’t walk Smith Street. He didn’t walk Eaton Street. He didn’t know what it was to chill out on Federal Hill. That’s what you sell. I can sell something totally different than any coach in the past because this is home for me. It’s authentic. It’s real, It’s love, it’s pride. That’s what you sell.”

Cooley then talked about the lack of privacy being the head coach, saying sometimes he just wants to be alone and go get the paper in his drawers. John Rooke was getting a little flustered, so Cooley said “I bet you go out in a bikini…with boots”. HA!

Kadeem Batts joined the show.

He was able to focus on school in the first semester, and said he did well. Also did some things to give back to the community, which Ed Cooley always stresses for everyone.

Fatigue is not a problem because everyone grew up playing AAU ball, playing all day.

Ed Cooley butts in: “Oh come on. That’s a layup drill AAU basketball, nobody plays hard”

Coming together as a team has been the biggest development.

Former Friar Kevin Stacom joined the show, who is now a scout for the Dallas Mavericks.

Cooley on Marquette: They are well coached, play relentless defense. Undersized but make up for it in their tenacity. 3 game changers. Jae Crowder one of the most under appreciated players in the country. Friar fans are going to enjoy seeing him come to the Dunk, and the Friars have to make sure he has a miserable afternoon. It’s going to be an “old school” BIG EAST battle.

Friars.com: New London High School To Play Mt. Pleasant High School At Providence College’s Alumni Hall

Kris Dunn is coming to Friartown early! OK, so it’s for his high school team. Either way, come on down and you’ll probably be treated to a triple double.

The New London High School (Conn.) boys basketball team will take on Mt. Pleasant on Saturday, February 4 at 2:00 p.m. The game will be played in Alumni Hall on the Providence College campus located next to the Concannon Fitness Center

NJ.com: Big East basketball news, notes and Star-Ledger Power Rankings for Jan. 20

The big news in Friartown has been the suspension of star guard Vincent Council. Head coach Ed Cooley benched the junior for last Saturday’s game at Syracuse for “accountability” issues. But Cooley said that he will be lifting the suspension for Saturday’s game against Marquette. “I definitely will play Vince this Saturday,” Cooley said. “We’re looking forward to having him back in the lineup.” … Despite being 1-5 in the league, Cooley said his team is still buying in and remaining positive in the face of adversity. “I try to accentuate the positive things that our program has done,” Cooley said. “This will be our sixth ranked opponent in the Top 25. We’ve been right there. … I think our kids have been resilient in a lot of games.”

Card Chronicle: Your Team Sucks: Big East Power Rankings Week Two

Good read on the state of all the current teams in the BIG EAST.

HH: Marqeutte’s next opponent, PROVIDENCE, might not win another game this year if PG Vincent Council, second in the Big East in assists and ninth in scoring, can’t fix whatever issues held him out of PC’s loss at Syracuse Saturday. The Friars lost Kadeem Batts for the entire fall semester due to “issues unbecoming of a student athlete” and now Council–whose absence Saturday was listed as a “coaches decision”–seems to have fallen into the same pit. According to our friend Dave who runs Friarblog, this likely stems from the lax culture cultivated during previous head coach Keno Davis’ tenure at Providence. Dave thinks it’s likely Council will return this Saturday which is good because I don’t see them winning their next two games vs. Marquette or at Pitt without him.

S: The Friars are a little lucky that they have a break this week so they can at least get used to life without him. They played incredibly poorly without him on Saturday. They were also playing Syracuse, so that was probably to be expected. If they can get Council back, that would be a huge help. Obviously not knowing what the issue is, publicly, makes them a hard team to peg.

We need bigs so bad, I almost don’t care.

5. Is Obekpa more than just a shot blocker?

It’s not that there is much doubt about whether or not Christopher Obekpa belongs on the list of the nation’s premier shot blockers. We are just curious to get another couple of looks at the athletic 6-foot-8 insider from Centerreach (N.Y.) Our Savior New American. In addition to getting another look at his shot blocking and rebounding prowess, we’ll be looking to evaluate his offense more closely. While he didn’t finish particularly well last weekend at the Hoophall Classic, he showed some touch and form on his jumper, along with quick spin moves to suggest that he’s not quite as offensively limited as some have made him out to be.

NJ.com: Nets’ MarShon Brooks showing signs of improvement in defense, passing

Keno is all, “Wait he can do those things?!”

Coach Avery Johnson said Thursday that Brooks’ defense in the game stood out, too.
“He probably had his best defensive game (Wednesday),” Johnson said of Brooks.
“He helped us out more in transition, because there are times he goes to the offensive glass and that compromises our transition defense. He didn’t do that (Wednesday).î
“I’m just trying to work on it all,” Brooks said of developing a better all-around game. “I’m just trying to make my weaknesses my strengths. I watch a lot of tape, so I just watch my decisions I make and what shots I take, which ones are good, which ones are bad. And I just try to get to those certain spots on the court, and if they help, I try to make the right play.”

Cox Sports posted more clips of their Friars All-Access show.

Vin Parise and Coach Cooley talk Providence College basketball and take a look at what Coach did to get the Friars in shape for a new basketball season under the new head coach.

Vin Parise sits down with Coach Cooley and freshman LaDontae Henton and talk about Coach’s high expectations for the 6’6″ forward.

Friartown is obviously excited about what Kris Dunn and Ricardo Ledo will bring to the Providence basketball program, but hardly anyone ever talks about the third recruit, Josh Fortune. Will he ever be a Friar on Fire?? Dave Johnson of Virginia’s Daily Press wrote a nice feature on the shooting guard.

Kecoughtan’s Josh Fortune: “A silent weapon”

Fortune is a typical shooter who is capable of scoring in bushels (24 points in the first half for Boo’s team last summer) or hitting a cold stretch. But when he hits that cold stretch, Fortune knows the only way to snap out of it is to keep firing.

His stoke looks like it came straight out of a Ray Allen instructional video. The jumper is his calling card, but Fortune has gotten better at putting the ball on the floor and shooting off the dribble.

“He definitely has NBA range, but I’ve seen his game grow,” said Warwick coach Lamont Strothers, who used to conduct individual workouts with Fortune. “His jump shot has opened the door for everything else, like taking it to the basket with his right or left hand. His jump shot has elevated his game.”

Johnson also goes a little more into the health of Fortune, who missed his last game due to back spasms. However, he is expected to return tomorrow night.

On the BIG EAST coaches teleconference call today, we got official confirmation that Vincent Council will play on Saturday against Marquette.

Sporting News: Providence lifts suspension on star guard Vincent Council

“I definitely will play Vince this Saturday. We’re looking forward to him back in the lineup,” Cooley said on the Big East coaches teleconference. “He gives us a totally different dimension … someone who is a triple-threat every time he touches the ball. We’ll definitely welcome him back this weekend.”

Cooley said following the 78-55 loss to top-ranked Syracuse that he wants to build the Providence program on a foundation of “character and integrity” and wouldn’t play favorites.

“If you can’t be a company guy and do things the right way, it doesn’t matter who you are to me,” Cooley said. “I want to build a team where it’s about trusting each other, and if you don’t do that you’re not going to play.”
