Video: Friars Lose to UMass at the Buzzer

Not to relive the pain, but here is the video of the UMass tip in at the buzzer to beat the Friars 77-75 in the first round of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

Right before this, the Friars had the ball with about 40 seconds left. LaDontae Henton got called for a highly questionable charge (although it wasn’t the best play by Henton, who had an overall pretty terrible game), allowing the Minuteman to hold for the final shot.

The short handed Friars had an overall gutsy performance, taking a 5 point lead late into the game after being down by as many as 11 in the first half. Bryce Cotton and Kadeem Batts were generally fantastic, and it was such a tough way to lose after playing so hard against all the odds.

PC will play Penn State at 7:30 tomorrow night.

Go Friars!

massachusettsGet your platanos and rice & beans ready Friartown, because the Puerto Rico Tip-Off is about to get underway. Instead of an easy hour and a half drive between the two schools, Providence College and Massachusetts decided it would be way more fun to play somewhere that required a flight to a place with amazing weather. It’s starting to get cold in New England, who wants to be bothered with that? Enter the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, a tournament the Friars participated in its inaugural year in 2007. PC had a solid trip to start that year (which unfortunately ended in a mediocre 15-16 season, Tim Welsh’s last) advancing to the final against Miami after defeating Temple and Arkansas.

This year in the first round, the Friars will face a run and gun UMASS team that has NCAA Tournament aspirations.
