If you didn’t know already, every Friar is eligible to play in the Mal Brown game. Neener, neener, neener. You can’t touch us here, NCAA!

The Fanfest will feature the annual Mal Brown intrasquad scrimmage at Noon in the newly renovated Mullaney Gymnasium with the 2012-13 men’s basketball team led by Head Coach Ed Cooley. All members of the Friar men’s basketball team will participate in the intrasquad scrimmage, including 2012-13 Preseason First Team All-BIG EAST Selection Vincent Council, LaDontae Henton and Bryce Cotton, as well as, newcomers Ricky Ledo, Josh Fortune, Carson Desrosiers and Tyler Harris.

notes Sometimes the Mal Brown game can foreshadow a season’s performance. LaDontae Henton showed Friar fans right from the start what kind of productive player he could be, scoring a game high 18 points with a perfect 4-4 from three point range. Other times, it could be a complete utter fluke like two years ago when Dre Evans scored 18 points and dished out 5 assists. Evans ended up only scoring 45 total points in his short Providence career, which was about 44 more than the number of readable things he posted on Twitter. It’s fun to see the team finally play after waiting all offseason, but I’m not going to lose my shit if Brice Kofane drops 20 points.

Today was media day at PC. Ed Cooley took the stage to discuss the upcoming season. All players were also in attendance and available for the media. The Warrior Friar attended and will have some stuff posted here soon.

The Friar was spotted on campus today. I know he’s been around for a while, but does he have any eligibility left? We need a live body for the 1st semester. Hit up one Ed Cooley’s workouts, Friar Mascot!

notes What URI did this weekend landing E.C. Matthews and Hassan Martin was great and all, but I think we need to dial it down on the whole Cooley vs. Hurley thing. Matthews is a great get, and URI is giving him the opportunity to play point guard. We have that Kris Dunn guy, remember? Hassan Martin seems like a solid forward, but with Harris and Desrosiers on board for next year, where would he fit in right away? Let’s face it, the Friars have not been winning much for a long time, so it’s going to be tough convincing some of these guys to be role players from the start. Cooley can sell his vision and himself, which is certainly a factor, but the W’s need to come at some point. I have faith that Ed Cooley will fill in the 2013 class with good pieces, setting up for a really big season. That being said, the PC / URI game in Kingston next year is going to be amazing.

Noah Vonleh Re-Classifies to 2013

Noah Vonleh 2Dave Telep of ESPN broke the news this afternoon that highly touted big man Noah Vonleh has entered the 2013 class. He was ranked #4 in the 2014 class, and now comes in at #7 overall amongst next year’s crop of players.

CBS reported that “North Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Syracuse and Ohio State are among the primary schools in the mix for Vonleh”. However, Ed Cooley should not be counted out right away, as he and his staff have been on him just as hard and have the local connection.

Vonleh visited the Friars along with his teammates from Rivals Basketball Club in June, according to ZagsBlog.

And for now, he’s getting to know the local coaches a little better.

Vonleh visited Providence along with Kaleb Joseph, Matt Cimino, Jeremy Miller, Josh Sharma, Jalen Adams and Mike Leblanc.

Pastore said Vonleh “loves” Providence and “has a good relationship with Ed Cooley.”

Despite the heavy competition among the the big boys, I would imagine PC would still get consideration as the recruitment speeds up. From the ESPN article:

“I’m going to try and make a list of 10-15 schools and see what schools have scholarships open for me in 2013 and see who wants to recruit me,” Vonleh said.

Hey, we have spots open! We just slow played you, URI!

calendar2 On Labor Day last year (September 5th), Friar fans got some great news when Ricky Ledo gave his verbal commitment to Ed Cooley. The buzz was insane with Kris Dunn already on board, and Friartown wanted more with dreams of also landing Nerlens Noel. On this Labor Day, Ricky’s status is now up in the air. Can we get some good news regarding Ledo on the same holiday?

notes Classes start tomorrow at Providence College. Sounds like most (if not all, I couldn’t really get a confirmation if Sidiki Johnson was there yet, but by all accounts is expected to be there on time) of the Friar players have arrived safely, and the newest ones are finding out the joys of Ray Cafe.

The Kiwi Gardner situation at PC was just odd. The school has been extremely quiet regarding any official news about him, and no local media said much about him other than a brief blurb saying Gardner was not likely to return this year. Fans still thought he was on the team, and national publications were even including him in stories about the Friars as late as last week. Apparently he signed on with the JUCO The College of Southern Idaho at some point this summer. Well, it seems that is not going to work out either, as according to the NJCAA website he was released from his LOI. The saga continues…

1. July Live Period

This week marks the first of three live periods in July where coaches can once again evaluate and recruit players. Up until now it seems like High Major programs including PC have offered scores of players. Pay close attention to where the staff is during July and who they are watching and you will know who the staff is really serious about. Early returns this week place Ed Cooley at the Addidas Invitational and he has been paying particularly close attention to the Mass Rivals team ( Noah Vonleh, Matt Cimino, Josh Sharma, Jeremy Miller, and Kaleb Joseph). Let’s see where else the staff pops up and who they are watching.

2. The Saga of Kiwi Gardner

Will he be a Friar or won’t he? The latest is that a final decision may not be made until September. Stay tuned. Until then, expect a few more Youtube videos to come out from the San Francisco Pro-Am League.
