Here is a nice insight into the mind of Greedy from the folks over at Dime Magazine.

Providence Human Highlight Reel Jamine Peterson

Dime: Talk about the Syracuse dunk.
JP: Well, they came at me, and I was trying to pass it to a teammate but he was already guarded. I saw A.O. (‘Cuse center Arinze Onuaku) coming towards me and I saw I had a nice angle off the glass … It was like, “Why not try it?” That’s something I used to do in high school and on the playground. I’d never done it before in a college game.

I also thought this exchange was interesting.

Dime: Despite your numbers, Providence is under-.500 this year. Why do you think you guys have struggled?
JP: We have a young team. We lost some seniors, and when you’re basically playing against top-ranked teams in the Big East every night, it’s hard when you lack experience. I think we have what it takes to be better once guys get time to work together in the summer. We’re not losing any starters and we have some good freshmen coming in.

Woh, not losing any starters?  Oh wait, is he not counting McKenzie because he has been actually invisible all season?  Or maybe he just doesn’t consider him a real starter?  And what about Sharaud Curry?  Am I reading too much into this interview, or are we seeing a subtle reference at some beef between the players?

What do you think?

Ten Tuesday Scribbles…

2. Big East: Jamine Peterson, Providence- This high-flying Friar might be the most athletic player in the Big East outside of Stanley Robinson. I witnessed his athleticism first-hand during the late stages of a win at Northeastern early this season when, inbounding under their basket, Peterson leaped over two Huskies on an alley-oop dunk that iced the game for the Friars. His skill set is incredibly rare: a 6’6 redshirt sophomore that can score with ferocity in the paint, step out and drain a three (40 made on the year) and absolutely dominate the glass. Peterson and the rest of his Friar teammates do have a propensity to turn the ball over with extreme frequency, but Jamine more than makes up for it with his 18.9 PPG. His rebounding ranks even a notch higher as Peterson is just 0.1 RPG from averaging a double-double, ranks in the top-50 in offensive rebounding percentage and has two games this season with 20+ rebounds, including an otherworldly 29/20 effort vs. Rutgers in January. A suspect overall floor game and woeful free throw shooting percentage are the only facets of Peterson’s game hindering his quest towards becoming a top-flight Big East player. With two years left at the Dunk (appropriately named), I’d be willing to bet Peterson receives more and more love from the national media as he averages 20/10 and the Friars improve under Keno Davis.

Greedy, sick of the ‘ol plain monster dunks off missed shots and whatnot, decided to create a little bit more fancy dunk by passing it to himself off the backboard WITHIN traffic.  How this was not the #1 play is beyond me.

The video is also on ESPN Mobile’s IPhone site as the “DUNK OF THE DAY” (3GP file)

Jamine Peterson got a lot of love on tonight’s 11PM SportsCenter, as they showcased all of his insane dunks in the big win over Connecticut.  My favorite was the last one, titled “Baseline Tomahawk”.  His knees almost hit the freakin’ rim!

Thanks to Ryan from RI Sports Coverage for the video!

Ever want to know what it would be like hanging out with Friars Bilal Dixon and Greedy Peterson while they spent hundreds of dollars on clothes?  Well, today is your lucky day! This awesome video has nothing to do with actual basketball, but anything that also features close ups of tattoos and players MAKING IT RAIN is OK in my book.

$900 on three things Mr. Peterson? Man you ARE Greedy!  Hey-ooooooo.  I’m here all night.

UPDATE (1/20 9:35 AM): The video has been removed by the uploader.  What a shame.

Just before halftime of PC’s blowout loss against Marquette, Jamine Peterson was ejected from the game for a flagrant elbow to Joseph Fulce.  The officials didn’t quite catch it at first, but used a new rule to replay the incident to determine that Greedy did in fact use a cheap elbow to the face to get position.

By that point in the game, the damage had already been done.  Marquette, a dangerous team from behind the arc, hit wide open three after wide open three to take a 16 point lead at the half (it was actually shocking it wasn’t more).  Without Peterson for the entire 2nd half, the Friars would be even in more trouble on both ends of the court.

In one of the game articles for the Providence Journal, Kevin McNamara writes: Peterson’s ejection leaves Friars short on offense

The loss of Peterson was an obvious blow to the Friars. Marquette went on a 22-7 run at the beginning of the second half and put an already improbable comeback out of reach.

Without Peterson, Marquette controlled the boards. The Golden Eagles outrebounded the Friars, 33-24. The Friars looked lifeless in the final 20 minutes without their No.1 offensive option.

Let’s break down the offensive efficiency ratings of both teams by half, to see if there was any difference by the numbers.

Note: The efficiency ratings are how many points would be scored in 100 possessions.

PROVIDENCE

1st Half - 96.67

2nd Half - 94.4

It’s interesting to see how similar the offense produced (well, or not produced) with and without Greedy.  Vincent Council was already taking more shots than usual in the first half, but he had to step up even more with one less weapon out there.  By increasing his season average of possession percentage by 10%, Council was able to beat his season high in scoring in the 2nd half alone (16 points, ended with 24 points total).  Other than Council, no other Friar used more possessions than usual — Sharaud Curry actually used less.

The Friars also scored 14 points in the paint in the 2nd, compared with only 8 in the first.

MARQUETTE

1st Half - 150

2nd Half - 133.3

Obviously Marquette dropped in the 2nd half because they could not keep up their torrid shooting (although they came pretty damn close).  With such a big lead in the 2nd, they didn’t have to keep launching away from downtown.  The Golden Eagles scored 20 points in the paint in the 2nd half, compared with 16 in the first.  I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Lazar Hayward scored 17 points in the 2nd without Greedy down low.

How About Rebounding?  Let’s take a look at the breakdown of offensive rebounding percentage.

PROVIDENCE

1st Half - 23.07%

2nd Half - 27.77%

MARQUETTE

1st Half - 45.45%

2nd Half - 38.46%

Peterson wasn’t even having a great rebounding game (0 offensive rebounds in 18 minutes), so it’s not surprising to see that the team put up relatively similar numbers each half.  What was surprising is that Vincent Council was the only Friar to have more than 1 offensive rebound, leading the team with 3.

Based on his first half before the ejection, it did not appear that Greedy would be a huge factor in this game. In fact, the team produced and rebounded just as equally in both halves.

Hey, at least the Friars put together two consistent halves for once!  Playing a more talented team on their own home court who can shoot lights out is generally going to end poorly for PC, with or without Greedy.

Apparently Jamine Peterson’s amazing 29 point, 20 rebound performance was not good enough for any BIG EAST weekly honors, or any mention in the ESPN Weekly Honors post.  I guess his stinker against Louisville brought him down so much, even doing something only 12 other BIG EAST players have ever done could not make up for it.

Harangody, Oriakhi Earn Weekly Men’s Basketball Honors

Harangody was named BIG EAST Player of the Week after he averaged 30.0 points and 5.5 rebounds and shot 57.9 percent from the field (22-of-38) to lead Notre Dame to a pair of close victories against BIG EAST opponents.  Harangody scored a season-high 36 points — including a go-ahead free throw with 1.9 seconds left — and had six rebounds in a 74-73 win at USF. He had 24 points and five boards on 9-of-15 shooting in a 70-68 win against No. 8/8 West Virginia

YAWN.  Jeremy Hazell (averaged 23 points), Dominique Jones (averaged 28 points), Wes Johnson (averaged 19 and 10 in two games), and Friar killer Scottie Reynolds (averaged 18 pts and 3 assists in 2 wins) made the honor roll.

In ESPN land, Katz doesn’t even give Greedy a mention among many other good performances for the week.  I guess the fact that it was against Rutgers makes it ho-hum?

Tennessee, CofC’s Goudelock take home honors

Seton Hall’s Jeremy Hazell, who has never seen a shot he doesn’t like, scored 33 in a win over Cincinnati.

Srsly? Man, if only Greedy could hit one of those 4 foul shots in a row he missed in the end to get to 30 points.

Mike Waters of the “Orange Basketball Blog” on Syracuse.com thinks that Jamine Peterson is the player to watch in conference play this year.

What to watch for in Big East basketball

Watch this Player
Jamine Peterson, Providence: After getting only sporadic playing time as a freshman in 2007-08, Peterson, a 6-foot-6 forward, took a redshirt last season. Now he’s averaging 18.3 points per game, which ranks sixth in the Big East. An unbelievable athlete with incredible leaping ability, Peterson scored 24 points in Providence’s loss at Notre Dame on Wednesday. The Friars play at St. John’s on Sunday.
